If you want a more in-depth, group-based approach to exploring well-being, think Do-it-Yourself Happiness. DIY Happiness is an innovative community well-being programme that consists of a series of eight 3-hour workshops. Each week, participants explore one of the themes of the Wheel of Well-being in a positive and participative way. Dare-to-Dream, the second stage of the programme, encourages participants to use the knowledge they’ve acquired to design tailor-made ‘happiness-boosting’ initiatives for their family, friends and local neighbourhood. Between 2009 and 2011, 350 women from across London took part in Well London’s DIY Happiness project in 20 local neighbourhoods. In 2012, the initiative was also run in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire. The project evaluation shows:
• improvements in well-being scores for all participants • significant improvements in feelings of cheerfulness, usefulness and optimism about the future
In 2014, a series of train-the-trainers programmes are planned for:
• Well London • Kent County Council • South London & Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust.
